What's Happening in the Vineyard

Grapevines are deciduous, woody perennial plants that follow an annual cycle of growth, fruiting and dormancy. This year, we’re following the cycle of growth in our Poor Farm Estate vineyard here at Edgefield.

Spring is an important time for grapevines. After a winter marked by dormancy and pruning, the vines are beginning to wake up and show signs of life.

As the temperatures rise, buds formed during the previous year’s growth cycle begin to swell, then burst, a phenomenon known as bud break. Each bud will produce a fruiting shoot. The timing of bud break is important because it represents the start of the growing season, which affects the timing of the harvest.

In Oregon, bud break occurs around the end of April. Over the next few weeks, the shoots will grow rapidly, building the canopy that will turn sunlight into vital energy for the spring and summer months.

Varietal Spotlight
Varietal Spotlight: Grenache

The star of our Cuvée de L’Abri Rouge, Grenache is the most widely planted grape in the Rhône Valley and one of the most widely planted varieties in the world. Originally from Spain, Grenache requires a long, hot growing season to reach ripeness, yet it is a delicate grape that’s light in color with spicy aromatics and soft berry flavors on the palate. It is perhaps best known as the star grape of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it is often blended with Syrah (for color and spice) and Mourvèdre (for structure and elegance), along with other permitted varietals. The Cuvée de L’Abri Rouge is made in homage to this tradition, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault.

Spring Food Wine Pairing
Spring Food and Wine Pairing:
2013 Cuvée de L’Abri Rouge

Our Cuvée de L’Abri Rouge has an intriguing nose of lavender, strawberry, honey and rose petal, which gives way to black raspberry, dark cherry, leather and a hint of cedar on the palate with soft, round tannins. This medium-bodied wine is still in its infancy, and will benefit from aeration and/or decanting to help it open up. Pair it with a simple meat dish such as rack of lamb, or this traditional French cassoulet: Recipe
