What's Happening In The Vineyard

Grapevines are deciduous, woody perennial plants that follow an annual cycle of growth, fruiting, and dormancy. This year, we’re following the cycle of growth in our Poor Farm Estate vineyard at Edgefield.

After the grapes are harvested, grapevine leaves continue to photosynthesize until the temperature drops, accumulating carbohydrates that will kick off the following year’s growth cycle. The shoots continue to lignify into the winter. As it gets colder, the leaves yellow and drop off the vines, and the vines enter their dormant phase, during which they consist entirely of woody tissue.
During dormancy, the vines are pruned back; in our vineyard, we leave only the trunk and two canes (lignified shoots from the previous year’s growth), which are trained along low wires. Those canes already contain all the primordial structures for the growth that will begin next spring.

Harvest Report

The 2016 vintage was early in Oregon, but relatively normal for Washington, which meant that Pinot Noir was the first thing into barrel—quite unusual here at Edgefield! However, the early harvest didn’t affect their flavor profiles. The wines are showing rich, aromatic fruit profiles and should be lovely when they’re released in 2018.
After processing 407 tons of grapes, the last thing to be pressed was our Walla Walla Cabernets, which promise plenty of structure and complexity. All of the wines will now rest in barrel during the coming months and continue to develop until blending and bottling next summer.
